Although they are inserted into the rectum, they still act as a stimulant.

  • Lactulose - This medication comes in crystals or liquid form. A type of sugar that isn’t digested by the body, Lactulose acts like a fiber and osmotic laxative combined. This type takes up to 3 days to work and may cause cramping and profuse gas.

There are other medications that act as stool softeners, which basically coat the bowel so water doesn’t get absorbed from the stool. Since the body naturally removes water from the colon, it isn’t suitable as a long-term solution for relieving constipation.

Laxatives bother my stomach ALOT, so they are out of the question.

Drink lots of water, eat lots of whole grain food and fresh fruits and veggies. You can also try Metamucil or a bulk fiber laxative. They aren't as stimulating as a regular laxative.

How does using laxatives as a diet product work for people with eating disorders?

How do these people end up losing weight by using laxatives? I don't mean to be gross, but isn't the poo just food that has already been digested? Therefore, the fat and calories are already absorbed into the body? I don't understand why people would want to do this to themselves. I could not imagine having bowel cramps all day and needing to stay near a toilet at all times, just for the sake of losing a few pounds, when it probably does not work anyway.

you can lose a lot of water weight too. It comes right back on after you normalize your hydration.

most laxatives work by drawing water into the intestines (making a flush) - once you re-hydrate after a couple of days you add the weight right back. Also, this can cause an electrolyte imbalance so its not smart/
