Are laxatives safe to use during pregnancy?
I'll be 36 weeks along on monday, and was wondering if anyone knew if laxatives are ok to take while pregnant? If so, what kind?
They can cause contractions. And diarrhea, so if you do go into labor, it won't be pretty.
Prunes and prune juice, as well as plenty of vegetables and whole grains, all of that is safe. And plenty of pure water. I had a nurse tell me to try some Australian style licorice, which is licorice that actually has licorice extract in it, and some have anise extract too. I've been eating a little piece every other day, and that has helped me, too.
Beyond that, you should really talk with your doctor.

No, I don't believe so. Late in pregnancy, they can actually trigger labor. Your best bet is a high fiber diet or to ask your doctor if you can take stool softeners. I had to take Colace during my first pregnancy and it was a life saver. I've only had to take it a few times this pregnancy (I'm 21 weeks along).

NO, you can drink prune juice or eat prunes. You don't take ANYTHING while pregnant without your Dr's permission!

Colace is safe. It's also alot better then a straight lax. in my opinion.
Up the fiber in your diet, and cutting out sugars will help tons as well!

your OB should have given you a list of ok meds to take, i was told stimulant-free stool softeners were ok, was even given them in the hospital, they take time to work but other than that i'd recommend them… of course there is also adding fiber to your diet, either pills, drinks, tablets or high fiber foods
