Has anyone had sucessful treatment for severe ibs?
I have recently been dianosed with severe IBS and have been in misery for several months now. I was wondering if anyone has had any sucess with treatment where you can have a somewhat normal life.
I have had several tests to exclude gallbladder and even a colonoscopy. The results from the scope said I had an impacted bowel. And all the meds and fiber they have tried has failed.
I also have it and I know how bad it is. I went 6 months without being able to leave the house for more then 20 minutes. My doctor told me to take Citrucel powder. I started taking it 2 times a day. It completely changed my life. In 2 years I have only had about 3 ibs episodes as compared to the 4 a day I used to have. Hopefully this helps you.

The first thing I would ask was what kind of tests were performed before you were diagnosed with IBS. IBS is a "functional disorder", which is basically just a fancy way of saying that the cause is unknown. Sometimes patients are given the IBS label before possible causes of their symptoms are explored. There have been some studies which a large percentage of IBS patients were found to have parasites. For some of these patients, their "IBS" symptoms dissapeared once the parasites were erradicated. I am not suggesting that all people diagnosed with IBS have parasites causing their symptoms, but it is an avenue worth exploring. You should definitely have a stool test from a reputable laboratory (if you haven't already). Even if you have never left the country, it is quite possible to have contracted parasites. There are other problems linked to IBS-like symptoms, too, such as yeast overgrowth, leaky gut syndrome, imbalance of beneficial bacteria in the gut, etc, which may be helped with individualized therapy often lacking in "convencional" medicine. There may be more options on the table than you might think. Since you didnt provide that many details about your condition or the treatment you have received thusfar, this may or may not be relevant to you. But be wary of the "one size fits all" approach to IBS: as a patient and as a human being, you deserve better than to be given that all-encompassing label without a very thorough diagnosis. If your current doctor can't respond to your satisfaction about the issues raised here, then you should find someone who can. Hope this is of some help or interest!
