Some constipation symptoms, such as infrequent bowel movements or having
difficulty or discomfort when passing stool—may be aggravating,
but they do not signal the possibility of a larger problem. Temporary
constipation can be caused by things such as new medication, dehydration,
hormone imbalance, and even traveling. But when constipation symptoms
such as severe abdominal cramping, back pain, or bloody stool appear—they
tend to signal the appearance of a more serious health issue.
A blockage or fecal impaction is often the cause of constipation
symptoms such as cramps or abdominal pains, A fecal impaction tends
to form where the large intestines and rectum meet. When this happens
and the impactions hardens and becomes dry, no waste can be passed during
bowel movements. As a result, you will notice a growing pressure
on your abdomen and lower back due to the feces building up behind the
impaction.
If a fecal impaction remains untreated, then abdominal pain will not be
your only constipation symptom. Lower back pain will follow once
enough feces and waste pile up behind the impaction point. In time,
the abdominal pains will give way to a loss of appetite or even nausea. There
may even be a milky discharge during bowel movements that may cause a
person to believe they have diarrhea instead of constipation problems.
The longer the fecal impaction remains, the worse the constipation symptoms
will become and the more acute the situation. The abdominal pains
that once only accompanied a bowel movement will start to be noticeable
even when not trying to pass any stool. Ultimately, the bacteria
and toxins present in the waste will reabsorb into the blood stream and
septicemia, and ultimately death, may result.
Bloody Constipation Symptoms
Blood in the stool is always cause for concern whether or not constipation
is or has been present. At best, it is a mild case of hemorrhoids
or an anal fissure caused by the intense straining caused when trying
to pass hard or dry stool. Although the hemorrhoids or anal fissures
will disappear a few days after the constipation clears up, the bloody
constipation symptoms may reveal a more troubling health concern.
Bloody constipation is sometimes due to polyps or colon cancer. Polyps
are non-cancerous growths on the inside of your colon that have the potential
for developing into cancer down the road. They may bleed when they
become inflamed during the strain of a difficult bowel movement and are
hit by the stool. But, the presence of dark or dried blood in the
stool is especially troublesome as it indicates the potential presense
of colon cancer. At the first sign of bloody constipation symptoms,
it is highly recommended that a doctor be consulted immediately.
However, most constipation symptoms are not indicators of larger health
issues and can be treated with proper diet and a good colon cleansing
at regular intervals. A colon cleanser will keep the gastrointestinal
tract clean and prevent future blockages. Try to find colon cleansers
made from all natural ingredients because those made with harsh chemicals
may cause harmful side effects that make the problem worse.
