How much baby prune/apple juice for constipation?

by admin ·

My son has occasional constipation now that we have him on formula. Can anyone tell me how much prune/apple juice they have given their children to help them go? 1oz? Diluted with any water? I bought the Heinz baby brand. I am more comfortable giving my son juice rather than sugar water.

I depends upon how old he is, and how is body reacts to it. If he has never had juice before, you would want to water it down, 1/2 juice, 1/2 H2O. You need to experiment, to see how much he needs to produce a bowel movement. I would start at 2 oz. (1 H2O, 1 juice), and work up to 4 oz. (2 + 2).
If that doesn't work, you should talk to your doctor about other options, such as changing formula.

I don't think you should use apple juice. Sometimes apple juice can cause lots of gas in babies and that doesn't make him feel any better.

I would use prune, white grape, or pear juice instead. I always used 2 ounces of juice with 1 ounce of water. Room temperature.

    Good luck!

If he is under 6 months juice is not appropriate, instead offer 1/2 oz of cooled boiled water 2-3 times a day. NO MORE, water intoxication is a serious problem.

If 6-12 months generally you dilute the juice by half or more and limit to no more than 3-4 oz a day.

My son was constipated at 1 1/2 months old, my doctor told me to try the karo syrup, it did nothing. Then he told me to add 1oz of prune juice to his bottle which I did. The next diaper change he had gone! I haven't had to use it again. Good Luck?
