What casues constipation and how can prevent it?

I have had it for a while now and im also vegeterian but I had it before that, what causes constipation? and what are some easy ways to get rid of it without going to the docter?

Gluten intolerance can cause constipation. If you're a vegetarian, you likely eat a lot of bread and pasta to make up for your meat. If you have other health problems or symptoms or if your constipation gets to a point where it's really bothersome, you could try a gluten free diet to see if it's causing your problems.

Another thing I've found to really help with constipation is green smoothies. There are lots of websites dedicated to green smoothie recipes but my favorite is 1 apple, a handful of fresh spinach, and another type of fruit, like berries or a pear. Add a cup of water and some ice and blend in the blender for a few minutes. You can't taste the spinach, it just tastes like fruit, but the fiber from the fruits cleans you right out. I started drinking them a couple months ago and I haven't had constipation since. The theory behind the smoothies is that the nutrients in the spinach are much more available when they're ground because our teeth can't grind them enough to get all the nutrients. I don't know if that's true or not, but it's really effective for constipation and all the fiber really lowers your appetite. It's great for dieting. Let me know if you need any more suggestions!

What is constipation exactly, ways to help it?

I was wondering, is constipation when you feel like you have to go but it wont come out, or if you just don't feel like you have to go at all?

Can be both. constipation occurs when the colon absorbs too much water or if the colon’s muscle contractions are slow or sluggish, causing the stool to move through the colon too slowly. As a result, stools can become hard and dry.

Treatments:
More Dietary fiber in your diet (like metamusil supplement)
Proper exercise and diet (including fresh fruits and veggies!)
Laxatives, enemas, suppositories if it gets too bad and you need a little 'help'

What is it about prunes that helps with constipation?

by admin ·

Is it just the fiber or is there something else in them that helps with constipation?

Prunes are just one of the "high-fiber foods" - Fiber makes the stool softer and easier to pass. Certain foods are wonderful, natural agents for regulating bowel movements and keeping the colon clear of harmful bacteria. Prunes are one example of this. Generations of people have used prunes to reverse the effects of constipation. Apple, pear, and cranberry juices all can help move things along and the acidity in these juices also helps balance the bacteria that are found normally in our bodies, particularly in the lower intestines and colon.

I took an exam for depression at the doctor and one question asked about constipation. I was just wondering what does this have to do with depression?

You don't feel better after dropping the kids off at the pool? I always feel my best when I make a mud monkey that I can be proud of. Hell, even talking about it has me smiling…

What kind of formula is best for constipation?

I'm breastfeeding my 10 week old also feeding her formula, but enfamil lipil with iron is giving her constipation, and I've researched and it appears that similac advance and nestle good start are the best? So which one should I use? (I know I should probably consult my pediatrician about this but I was just wondering so I would know before I went in to see the pediatrician.) Thanks!

I don't know if you're keen on home remedies, but I have something simple that my grandmother has used for over 50 years.

Chamomile tea - add a bit of sugar and keep it warm and she will be pooping in no time. Most of time she will still be drinking while she fills her diaper. It also gives them a new taste.

I used it for both my kids…it also works wonders when they have upset tummies.

Good luck!

How much baby prune/apple juice for constipation?

by admin ·

My son has occasional constipation now that we have him on formula. Can anyone tell me how much prune/apple juice they have given their children to help them go? 1oz? Diluted with any water? I bought the Heinz baby brand. I am more comfortable giving my son juice rather than sugar water.

I depends upon how old he is, and how is body reacts to it. If he has never had juice before, you would want to water it down, 1/2 juice, 1/2 H2O. You need to experiment, to see how much he needs to produce a bowel movement. I would start at 2 oz. (1 H2O, 1 juice), and work up to 4 oz. (2 + 2).
If that doesn't work, you should talk to your doctor about other options, such as changing formula.

How to get rid of a bloated belly caused by constipation?

by admin ·

I've been having this problem the last few days, and need help badly …I suffer from constipation, and a few days ago my belly started to get bloated, and I dunno what to do. I've been eating lots of fiber to try to stop the constipation but its no use.
Should I try a laxative? will this end the whole bloated belly thing? It makes me look about a few pounds heavier, Help?

Thanks !

It sounds like you have been constipated for several days. I think eating fruit and taking some stool softeners may help, if not by all means take a gentle laxative because you are filling up with gas and you need to relieve all that pressure and contents of your colon. Also drink plenty of liquids maybe prune juice which is a natural laxative.

What food to eat if you have constipation?

by admin ·

I know you should eat and drink more water, and grains, but could you give you me some recommendation for healthy, nutritious, and high in fiber, low in sodium food or snack?

Also, how does constipation occur?

i have been constipating for about 1 week, and i am taking medication from doctor, i need a faster way to cure it, so i could be back on the track.

The best long term cure I've found is a primarily vegetarian diet, plenty of water, some probiotics, proper weight management, and lots of daily exercise.

This is kind of my "cures what ails ya" strategy. Works for just about everything. Things have been working smoothly ever since.

What causes constipation is a bit complicated. Has to do with diet and flora (bacteria) balance in the intestine….

What can help with chronic constipation?

My youngest has been suffering from constipation for a couple of weeks. The only way she can go by the use of laxatives and stimulants. The doctors are not being much help. What can we do or use to help her?

I have suffered from this since I was a child. From the sounds of your situation, your doctors aren't much help…mine weren't either until now.

First, please have your doctors check for a lactose and wheat intolerance because that could solve your problem right off the bat. If there is an intolerance and you eliminate these from the diet, problem should be solved.

Here's what we have done and it is finally working!

2 doses per day of Milk of Mag, a daily dose of fiber and a TON of water. I had to do this for about two months to train my digestive system to go daily. Once I had gotten on a schedule of daily bowel movements, I was able to slow down to one dose per day of the Milk of Mag. After about a total of 4 months, my body took over and started to do what it was supposed to do.

I still have problems triggered by certain foods so I also did a food diary to try and figure out which ones were causing the problem.

Your child may have juvenille Irritable Bowel Syndrome as well. This can be helped, but not cured, with a certain type diet and help from the doctors. Keep hounding them and they should eventually start to get the ball rolling.

Good Luck!

Is heavy mineral oil for constipation relief good for coating my bamboo cutting board?

by admin ·

I'm not sure whether or not heavy mineral oil which I found in the constipation section of my local pharmacy is food safe or not. I presume it is ingested as it's a laxative but am not certain if it's adequate for the cutting board. If not can someone please tell me where to find the food safe stuff? Thanks in advance!

If it is plain mineral oil with nothing added to it, I would imagine it is safe to use on your cutting board. I don't think I have ever seen mineral oil specifically for constipation.

You want to make sure there isn't anything besides mineral oil in it, or it will go rancid on the wood of your board. Also, vegetable oil, canola oil, and olive oil will all go rancid on your board.

Whole Wheat is supposed to be high fiber good for constipation but wheat produces lot of heat. How come?

I have always heard that wheat produces lot of heat hence should be avoided during summer coz it may aggravate piles , constipation etc But its also mentioned that Whole wheat has lot of fiber and hence is good for constipation. How come?

The health benefits of wheat depend entirely on the form in which you eat it. If you select 100% whole wheat products, however, the bran and the germ of the wheat will remain in your meals, and the health benefits will be impressive! Our food ranking qualified whole wheat (in its original non-enriched form) as a very good source of dietary fiber and manganese, and as a good source of magnesium.

The many benefits of whole wheat products are being recognized more and more by consumers.

Women Who Eat Whole Grains Weigh Less
Whole Grains Reduce Risk of Metabolic Syndrome
Whole Grains Substantially Lower Type 2 Diabetes Risk
Whole Wheat's Betaine Lessens Chronic Inflammation
Whole Grains Help Prevent Gallstones
Whole Wheat Gets You Going
Whole Wheat Promotes Women's Health and Gastrointestinal Health
Cereal and Fruit Fiber Protective against Postmenopausal Breast Cancer
There are number of other benefits too.
Here what type of heat ,do you mean ? In short it does not cause any adverse heat, but do produces heat to maintain basic functions of life .
And what is means by How come?.

How can I avoid my daughter having constipation when switching from formula to whole milk?

I've heard that drinking whole milk can cause constipation and I'd like to avoid that with my 1 year old daughter. I've also heard that putting some karo syrup in the milk will help but I don't know how much to put in; can anyone help?

give her lots of water, stay away from other dairy for a while and then gradually reintroduce it… like cheese, yogurt, etc. Just keep an eye and if you notice it being a problem, then worry. But until then just switch gradually and her system should keep up

What can a gal with gastroparesis do to ease constipation from lack of fiber?

by admin ·

I have recently been diagnosed with postviral gastroparesis. Although I am tolerating the low fat low diet fairly well (oh how I miss fresh veggies and loathe baby food!), I have developed a strong tendency towards constipation. I believe this is due to the "low fiber" part of my diet. I am a little concerned about this because of a strong family history of colon cancer, and fiber is said to help prevent it… What can I eat or take to relieve the constipation?

Hey, I'm very sorry about your recent diagnosis. I also have gastroparesis. My gastroenterologist recommended Miralax to me. I haven't tried it yet because I haven't had problems with constipation, but it's supposed to be a mild, but effective laxative. I know what you mean about baby food… ugh! I prefer blended up soups now to baby food, except the fruit ones are ok. You should check out the yahoo group for gastroparesis. They offer a lot of support and advice for fellow patients. The link is http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/gastroparesis/. They are a wonderful group and it's a great place to vent when you're having a rough day. Good luck to you.

A friend of mine overseas (lebanon) has trouble with stomach pain and constipation. I am 100% sure its diet related. Can anyone point me to a site or information that will give me a diet that could be followed in Beirut?
Are there any health food stores in Beirut?

Your friend should avoid greasy, high fat food and acidic food like citrus juices, carbonated drinks. A tablespoon of coriander seeds is a natural home remedy for stomach aches, to be eaten after meals. More home remedies for stomach ache at http://www.aches.in/homeremediesstomachache.html

What causes constipation when your pregnant?

by admin ·

I am five weeks pregnant and the last few days I have had constipation….I can go but its hard to not much of it at all….what can I do? any insight would be helpful thanks!

It's terrible, isn't it? It's caused by the pregnancy hormones slowing down your digestive system. Scientists think this is so the body can get every little bit of nutrition from the food you eat, which might have been important hundreds of years ago.

I found that the kind of fiber in whole grains didn't help as much as eating fresh veggies. I have some celery, carrot sticks, bell peppers, etc. with every meal, and fruit with breakfast. Lots of salad, too. It's the only thing that really helped me…. even softeners did nothing.

By the way, my record for not going was 10 days. Consider yourself lucky.

What diet should I have to rid of constipation?
Any idea how can I get a healthy intestinal transit?
Thanks,

High fiber diets are the best for your intestinal tract and for constipation. The fiber helps stimulate your GI tract to push everything down and out. high fiber diets are also a good way to protect yourself from colon cancer. you can find fiber in cereal, whole grain bread, fruits and vegetables. you can also take a fiber supplement, but it is never as good as getting it in your diet.
