Fiber Battles Constipation Problem Among Elderly

Aside from simple hemorrhoids, hernia, and laxative dependence, constipation in the elderly can be more severe than ever. It can be simple and easy to prevent constipation when the bearer will just follow on the easy steps on preventing it. The most effective means in treating constipation is "fiber" as it helps soften the stool and also help the stool pass through the gastrointestinal tract easier. Fruits, vegetables, and grains are foods rich in fiber. The elderly can also keep themselves away from constipation by not getting themselves dehydrate; it is advisable to drink plenty of water and liquids from fruit and vegetables juice as well as having enough exercise.

What Happens When Frequent Bowel Movements Become Infrequent?

Having frequent bowel movements is something to be proud of because it means that your body is disposing of toxins and bacteria properly.  A constipation problem, on the other hand, means that those waste products are building up in your body.  When bacteria levels get too high, a condition known as septicemia may form.  Basically a large infection raging all throughout your body, septicemia will result in death if not caught early enough.  However, septicemia is not the only thing you have to worry about when failing to treat constipation in a timely manner.

Clean Bowels Best Cure for Constipation

You can look up and down the aisles at the pharmacy and still never find any true cure for constipation.  The simple fact is that there are simply too many potential problems or conditions that can be the cause of constipation that no true cure exists.  Many of the common constipation remedies sold on the shelves at the stores are designed to relieve the problem but not prevent it.  Laxatives are by far the most common form of constipation relief on the market today but they only stimulate the colon so that it pushes waste through the bowels.  But what happens if the source of the bowel incontinence is actually a blockage?  Or, what if dehydration is the cause of constipation and the stool is dry and hard—will a laxative help or hurt the situation in that case?
