I read that metformin causes diarrhea but I have constipation. Doe's anyone have the same problem and what do they do?

Metformin doesn't cause constipation… poor diet does. Eat more fruits and vegetables. I promise, everything will come out fine.

actually, the most common side effect of metformin is diarrhea. regardless of the cause, you can treat the constipation the same way (i.e. increase fiber intake or use fiber supplementation, take a stool softener such as docusate). If you have not had a bowel movement in sometime, you can resort to more immediate measure such as milk of magnesia, miralax, senna, bisacodyl, etc. all available in the pharmacy. just ask the pharmacist!

Normally metformin caused diarrhea. Talk to your doctor, it could be any number of things, including diet.

Metformin is used alone or with other medications, including insulin, to treat type 2 diabetes (condition in which the body does not use insulin normally and, therefore, cannot control the amount of sugar in the blood) . Metformin helps to control the amount of glucose (sugar) in your blood. It decreases the amount of glucose you absorb from your food and the amount of glucose made by your liver. Metformin also increases your body's response to insulin, a natural substance that controls the amount of glucose in the blood. Metformin is not used to treat type 1 diabetes (condition in which the body does not produce insulin and therefore cannot control the amount of sugar in the blood).

Metformin may cause side effects. Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe, do not go away, go away and come back, or do not begin for some time after you begin taking metformin:

    diarrhea
    bloating
    stomach pain
    gas
    constipation
    unpleasant metallic taste in mouth
    heartburn
    headache
    sneezing
    cough
    runny nose
    flushing of the skin
    nail changes
    muscle pain

Some side effects can be serious.
