How can I cure constipation after surgery?

by admin ·

I had breast surgery done two days ago as a result of pain medication I have constipation and it is very frustrating. Can you please give me some tips as to what to eat and what not to eat?

Some Kelloggs All Bran will do the trick. Also try apple sauce or juice.

This is not a matter of what you do or do not eat.
Talk with your doctor about the problem and ask him if he can review the pain control medication for you.
He will try something else and monitor you for side effects.

I was in the same boat as you were, except mine was a [surprisingly painful] tonsilectimy (sp?)
my painkiller had also backed me up quite a bit but prune juice seemed to work alright for my system.
you kinda just need to accept the fact it tastes like liquid raisin ;]
    hope you feel better!

God I just love doctors and their incompetent or at least uncaring staff’s. They probable gave you instructions while you were coming out of the anesthesia so you would remember it.

I had surgery a few years ago they put me on Oxycontin or Vicoden or something like that for the pain. Four days later I was so bound up, I felt like there was a brick inside me. Then I get the call from the doctor’s office seeing how I was doing. When I responded "the surgery is healing fine; but, I have severe constipation", she said "Oh, didn’t we tell you you needed to increase the fiber, drink plenty of fluids and take a stool softener". "Duh, No". She apologized and stated they often forget to tell patients that the pain killers desensitized the colon so you don’t feel the contractions and the next thing you know you’re bound up.

Now what can you do about it.
    1. Take 2 to 4 stool softeners now (they will help you go; but, won’t make you go) . Two more tomorrow and continue taking them until you’re off the pain killers. This (duh) keeps your stools soft.
    2. Increase your fiber intake. Metamucil or Fiber Choice plus whole grain foods, beans, vegetables.
    3. 6 to 8 glasses of water per day.
    4. If you’re up to it go for a brisk (or as brisk as possible) walk every day.
    5. Take time each day for pooping. If it doesn’t happen get off the pot because straining is bad particularly if you have stitches.

If all else fails and you are in major discomfort or you feel a major blockage, get a combination water bottle, enema/douche syringe and take a 1 to 2 warm water enema. Add a teaspoon of salt per quart so as to keep the solution isotonic and less like to be absorbed into the blood stream. The enema should be administered slowly (forget the old high, hot and hell-of-a-lot). Hang the bag so the bottom of the bag is 12 to 18" above your rectum. Purge the air out of the hose and let it slowly fill you until you don’t think you can hold more. Lay there and retain it for as long as possible 15 to 30 minutes. This will soften the fecal mater and clean you out. You can repeat this with more volume if you feel the need.
