Abdominal Pain And Constipation Due To Fecal Impaction

The hardening of stool between the large intestine and the rectum is called fecal impaction. It may create a blockage in the gastrointestinal tract causing little to no relief during bowel movements. The longer the fecal impaction remains, the more it disables the body from defecating. Thus, the more severe pain and pressure will become in the abdomen. The correlation between abdominal pain and constipation as possible symptoms of fecal impaction is often mistaken as a bad case of the flu. In fact, since the blockage only allows watery waste to pass through the body, most of us tend to ignore the problem, thinking the diarrhea is a result of the flu, and will pass in a few days. Little do we realize that the opposite of the problem is true.

People should be warned that extreme problems with constipation extend beyond the typical infrequent bowel movements and may involve more advanced symptoms, such as:

* Severe pain in abdomen area even when not trying to have a bowel movement* Lower back pain
* Bloody Stool

Constipation has many causes. They may include poor diet, lack of exercise, inadequate intake of water, or something more serious. Many people have been taught that constipation is related to the number of times you have a bowel movement. In reality, constipation has relatively little to do with how many times you have bowel movement. It is normal for someone to have anywhere from 3 bowel movements per week to 3 bowel movements a day. If your stools are soft and pass easily and you pass them at least 3 times per week, you are not constipated. The most common trigger of constipation is lack or adequate amounts of water and fiber in the diet. The longer the stool sits in the large intestine waiting to be passed, the harder and less easy to pass it becomes. There are many other reasons that you may find yourself constipated and here are some of the reasons why:

* A change in schedule, such as traveling or anything that changes your daily routine

* Waiting to have a bowel movement

* An increase in your stress levels

* Lack of exercise

* Loss of activity as a result of injury or aging

* Pregnancy
